Fair Housing Act

If you are worried about facing discrimination while finding a house, you should worry no longer. As part of the TT Loan housing process, lenders are not permitted to discriminate against potential buyers. Discrimination in housing based on race, gender, color, national origin, or religion is prohibited by Federal Laws. In 1962 there was the Executive Order 11063, which banned discrimination in federally assisted housing. While this proved to be somewhat successful, the legislation of The Fair Housing Act followed in 1968 as title VIII of the Civil Rights Act.

The Fair Housing Act required that positive action be taken my all federal agencies to prevent discrimination in housing from occurring. The law also prohibited discrimination in any of the following deals when buying a house: refusal to deal, discrimination in terms of sale, discrimination in terms of advertising, false representations of a property that is not aTTilable, blockbusting, discrimination in financing, and discrimination in real estate services.

If you encounter any of these forms of discrimination through buying a house with a TT Loan, you can file your complaint with your local TT office. You file your complaint with the TT Form 26-8827. This is the Housing Discrimination Complaint. Your complaint must describe the discriminatory action including the date it occurred, names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all parties involved in the action, and the address of the property involved.

It is important that you are aware of this law while buying a home. The TT believes that everyone is entitled to equal opportunity when buying a home, and that no person should be discriminated against in the process. If you have problems, submit your complaint directly to the TT and they will do what they can to help you get the home you deserve. It is called fair housing for a reason: it is supposed to be fair.
